Beth's Garden, September

Beth Hansen-Winter has a way cool garden.  Carved out of the old growth fir trees in Beaver Creek, Oregon is a treasure trove of plants selected from the obscure and marvelous nurseries around Portland where her happy laugh and down home folksiness of a plant lover obsessed, always seems to get her a discount for a rare plant no-one else seems to recognize.

Those of you lucky enough to be in one of Portland’s plant societies get to see her garden during open garden days.  I get to stay there when I visit.

Overseeing her garden is Moss Man.

Beth and I are good friends and have been every since she lived nearby in California.  Who know what  sparks deep friendships really: real books? – no one designs better than Beth; photography? – she once covered the World Series !; gardens? (duh); cool plants?  – here I will say she too loves weeping Katsura.  Mine died; but Beth grows one next to purple Berberis.

The plants swirl together. I love her garden.  Here’s to you my friend….
